Step By Step Guide To Pet Cremation

Losing a pet is a difficult time, and not knowing the process of what happens during the cremation process can make it even more upsetting. By understanding the process and knowing what options you have, you’ll be able to make a more informed decision through your grieving time.

If your pet has passed away at your vet, they will be able to give you the information about contacting a pet cremation centre. Whether the pet has passed away from an emergency at home or scheduled euthanasia, our caring staff will be able to guide you through their process of collecting your pet.

If your pet has passed away at your home, the same process applies, and our professional staff will be able to come to your home immediately.

Once your pet has been collected, the staff at our Pet Crematorium welcome you to be involved in the process as much or as little as you like. They will guide you through the process, and you can expect to be able to collect the ashes of your pet within 72 hours in normal circumstances. This time frame allows for the collection, the cremation, the cooling, the processing and placement in the selected urn and/or keepsake.

The cremation process will take place at our Stapylton Facilities.

You can also have special requests granted. This could be something like removing something from your pet such as a special collar, a lock of hair for a keepsake, or even requesting a paw print of your pet to have framed later. Our team will not charge for this additional service. We welcome you to discuss any queries and/or concerns you may have.

You may request to be onsite during the cremation, or you can be informed when the process is completed. Your pet’s ashes will go into a temporary urn until you have decided on the type of urn you’d like.

There is a large selection of different types of urns for pets available including:

  • Biodegradable urns
  • Metal urns
  • Scatter tubes
  • Timber urns

We also offer a range of keepsake jewellery options.

When picking an urn, you’ll need to take into consideration:

  1. The weight & size of your pet,
  2. The design of your home or garden, where you want to place the urn and,
  3. Your budget

Once you’ve taken home your pet’s ashes in your urn, you can decide with your family if you’d like to scatter the ashes, keep them in the urn for a later date or keep them permanently in the urn. Some ideas of where to scatter the ashes could be a favourite bush trail, favourite beach or creek, favourite dog park, private gardens or even your backyard.

If you do decide on scattering ashes on private land, it is essential to get permission from the owner of private land or the Trust of Parks and Reserves or the local council for parks and beaches.

If you decide you or someone in your family may need grief support during this time, several resources can assist. The team at Pet Haven are available for contact 24/7 at 1800 789 567, and we can send out professional staff to your home or your vet immediately.

Grief is Natural

Honour your pet with an urn of your choice or an array of keepsakes to make their memory last forever.

It’s a Process

Grief and mourning are a process, not an event. There is no specific timeframe for healing.

Everyone is Different

How long grief takes can differ from person to person. Your journey is unique to you.

What if I don’t want my bird’s ashes returned to me?2026-02-11T02:00:00+10:00

If you’d prefer not to have your pet’s ashes returned, they will be scattered in a dignified manner on your behalf. You can rest assured your pet’s remains and ashes will be treated with the utmost respect throughout their time under our care.

What kind of container can I use to store my bird’s ashes?2026-02-11T02:00:00+10:00

Pet Haven offers a variety of carefully selected urns and keepsakes for storing your bird’s ashes. Choose from a selection of traditional urns, modern app-based designs or biodegradable urns which are a popular choice for those looking to curate a nature-inspired memorial, allowing your pet to rest peacefully in an environment they loved. You can browse our catalogue here on our website.

Why should I choose cremation?2026-02-11T02:00:00+10:00

Cremation is a great choice for bird owners who wish to memorialise their beloved feathered friend, for the following reasons:

Cremation provides you with a small amount of ashes that can be kept as a memorial, unlike burial where the remains are buried underground.
Additionally, cremation eliminates the need to find a suitable burial site that is both legal and suitable for the deceased pet.
It also gives pet owners greater control over the final disposition of their pet’s remains, as you can decide what will be done with the ashes rather than leaving it up to a third party.

What happens if I want to scatter my bird’s ashes?2026-02-11T02:00:00+10:00

You may wish to scatter your bird’s ashes in a place that is meaningful to you, such as a favourite park, your home garden, or a special location in nature. However, it is important to be mindful of your local laws and regulations when considering these options. If you opt for scattering or burying ashes, make sure that the chosen location allows it.

How much does bird cremation cost?2026-02-11T02:00:00+10:00

To get your bird cremated, you will be charged around $250, though this might increase with the size of your pet.

We also offer packages including:

Cremation & urn
Cremation & temporary urn
Cremation & scatter tube
Keepsake packages

An after-hours fee will also apply between 5-8pm. For a tailored quote, please contact us today on 1800 789 567.

How long does cremation take?2026-02-11T02:00:00+10:00

Cremation is a quick process which roughly lasts an hour for birds.

For an additional charge, you can witness the beginning of the cremation process from our viewing room, although we’re only able to offer this service for the first cremation of the day, which occurs early in the morning.

Can I keep one of their feathers?2026-02-11T02:00:00+10:00

Yes, you can. Holding onto a feather is a beautiful way to remember your bird’s life, especially if you decide to bury or scatter their ashes. It can serve as a reminder to you of both their vibrant colour and personality.

After my first experience here with having to put my 17 year old cat to sleep, I would now not go elsewhere in future and wouldn’t recommend anywhere/anyone else. Jane made us feel so at ease with the whole process. The professionalism of the home collection of our beloved pet was reassuring that we had made the right choice in choosing who to trust with such an emotional process. The affordable prices made it feel as though they genuinely want to help, rather than make money, which we extremely appreciated.

To say this year has been rough for us would be an understatement. We have lost our precious feathered and fur babies two at the beginning and one just last week. Jane was our saviour for all three completely understanding and helped us through the process and finding the right urn for all. All individual and personalities that could show through. So far we have used this company four times and with my love for my animals won't be the last time(although hopefully not for a while). Jane is very much an asset and I can't thank her enough for the wonderful service she provides. Many beautiful urns that don't look like urns and the care, always next level. Thank you again 💓
